What is the Florida DETS course?
The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course is a state-mandated 6-hour educational program required for all first-time Florida license applicants between the ages of 14 to 17 who have never held a driver’s license from any US state, country, or jurisdiction. It became mandatory on August 1, 2025, replacing the old 4-hour TLSAE course for teen applicants. It is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and must be completed before applying for a Florida learner’s permit.
Is this course approved by the Florida FLHSMV?
Yes. This course meets or exceeds the Florida Department of Education Traffic Safety requirements and is approved by the FLHSMV statewide in all 67 Florida counties.
Is this the same as the old TLSAE drug and alcohol course?
No. The DETS course replaced the old 4-hour TLSAE course for all new drivers under 18 as of August 1, 2025. The DETS course is 6 hours long — 2 hours longer than the old TLSAE — and covers more content including teen-specific risk factors, defensive driving, and hazard awareness. The TLSAE course still exists but now applies only to first-time drivers who are 18 years of age or older.
Can I take the old 4-hour TLSAE course instead of the DETS course?
No, not if you are under 18 and applying after August 1, 2025. Taking the 4-hour TLSAE will not satisfy Florida’s requirement and will delay your permit application. If you completed the TLSAE before August 1, 2025, you may use that certificate to apply for your permit within one year of the completion date. After one year, you must complete the DETS course.
How long is the course?
The course is 6 hours, as required by Florida state law. The course enforces a 6-hour minimum through timed sections but it is so fun and easy that you will not even notice how quickly those 6 hours will pass! You can spread the 6 hours across multiple sessions and log in and out as needed. Your progress saves automatically.
