Massachusetts Defensive Driving
More information to help you make the right choice.
A defensive driving course/driver retraining course is often required of drivers who commit certain types of traffic offenses, drivers who have an excess of driving record points and those who are issued a court order. Others choose to complete a defensive driving course or a traffic school course on their own accord in order to receive a car insurance discount that is typically called a “safe driving discount”.
Those who complete a traffic school course will boost their defensive driving abilities and knowledge base. The result of participation in this course could prevent future driving accidents and traffic offenses.
This page is designed to inform drivers about both mandatory driver retraining programs as well as voluntary defensive driving/traffic school courses.
Massachusetts' Mandatory Defensive Driving
Massachusetts drivers who hold a regular Massachusetts driver's license might be required to complete the driver attitudinal retraining course under certain circumstances. This course is required in the following scenarios:
- When a driver commits several traffic violations.
- When a driver accumulates an excess of DMV driving record points.
- When a driver has been ordered by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) or a court to complete the course.
Those who are required to complete a defensive driving course will receive a mailing from the MA RMV that includes the following information:
- A specific date by which the course must be completed.
- The name of the specific defensive driving course that must be completed.
- A listing of the clearance documents and additional fees that must be submitted.
All drivers who receive the notice from the Massachusetts RMV must complete the defensive driving program within 90 days of receiving the notice.
NOTE: A driver with a suspended license may be subjected to subsequent violation fines as well as reinstatement fees.
Massachusetts Defensive Driving Course Details
The purpose of defensive driving courses in Massachusetts is the following:
- To provide drivers with the knowledge that is necessary to drive in a safe manner.
- To lower the odds of drivers being involved in accidents while on the road.
- To prevent drivers from committing more traffic violations.
- To improve drivers' driving abilities and habits.
Drivers should be aware that the MA RMV will add points to an individual's driving record when he commits traffic offenses. When an excess of points are accumulated, the driver may be subjected to fines, mandatory traffic school and a suspension of his driver's license.
Drivers can always order a copy of their driving record in order to see how many points they've accumulated.
SCARR for Young Drivers
Those who hold the Junior Operator License, commonly called the JOL, or a learner's permit might be required to complete a SCARR program to prevent road rage. This is typically required of young drivers who've been found guilty of a major traffic offense or if ordered by a court judge.
The SCARR program is meant to educate inexperienced drivers about the ramifications of poor driving habits. It is also designed to boost the driving quality of problem drivers.
Massachusetts' Voluntary Defensive Driving Courses
Those who voluntarily enroll in traffic school might be eligible for a discount on their car insurance premiums.
Plenty of auto insurance companies offer accident prevention and defensive driving discounts to teens as well as senior citizens. Some provide such discounts to drivers of all ages. Check with your auto insurance company to determine if you are eligible for such a discount.
Reach out to your auto insurance provider to obtain a list of available defensive driving courses.
The majority of defensive driving courses that are taken voluntarily last between 4 and 6 hours, depending on the provider. Most of these programs culminate in a final exam that must be passed in order for the participant to receive an auto insurance discount.
Drivers who pass the course's final exam will receive a defensive driving completion certificate. Oftentimes, auto insurers require that this certificate be submitted in order to apply the driver's insurance discount.
