The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) offers several different Defensive Driving Courses that you can take to help with the following situations:

  • Fulfill a requirement for the Minnesota DPS.
  • Fulfill a guilty traffic conviction.

Defensive driving or traffic school will help by teaching you how to drive safer and as well the following:

  • You will finish the course with a better attitude about driving.
  • Will decrease your chances of causing any wrecks.
  • Will help you avoid getting more tickets or violations.

In the following information you will find what the requirements are for voluntary and required defensive driving courses, and who you will need to contact to get more information.

Reasons to Complete Traffic School

In the state of Minnesota you can voluntarily sign up to take a defensive driving course, or the Minnesota DMV or local courts may require it if you have acquired a ticket.

Once this course is completed it can save you money on your car insurance, as well as teach you some valuable knowledge for becoming a safer driver.

Required Traffic School

The court handling your traffic ticket may require you to attend a driver improvement course if:

  • You have been found guilty of several minor traffic violations.
  • Your license id suspended and you are reinstating it.
  • You have been found guilty of major traffic offenses including:
    1. A death or serious injury was the result of an accident that you caused.
    2. Hit and run.
    3. DUI

Minnesota Traffic School Options

Traffic school is offered both in the traditional classroom setting as well as online.

If you choose to take the course online you will have the option of studying at your convenience. However, you will still have to abide by a deadline for completing the course.

If the defensive driving course has been required from your traffic court you will receive the following information:

  • A deadline for completing the course.
  • The exact course you must take.
  • Any extra documents the court may need.
  • Any fees that you need to pay.

The Minnesota DMV may suspend your license if you do not complete the course by the deadline.

Defensive Driving Course Details

Whether you take your courses in a classroom or online the subject matter will be the same and will include the following:

  • Traffic laws and safety in Minnesota
  • Methods of defensive driving.
  • Sharing the roads with other drivers.
  • Having a good driving attitude.
  • Consequences of DUI’s.

You can expect your class to take between 4 to 12 hours to complete. The course provider will be able to tell you the exact cost and give you your schedule for completing the class.

Once you finish the classes, you will need to take and pass a final exam. Once you pass you will receive a certificate of completion. They will also send a copy to the Minnesota DPS or traffic court to provide proof that you completed the requirements.
