Oklahoma Defensive Driving Courses
The moniker for traffic school in Oklahoma is “defensive driving course.” The Sooner State’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) is tasked with the regulation of these defensive driving schools to ensure that they comport with applicable Oklahoma vehicular codes. As such, if you looking to attending a particular driving course, you should first make sure that it has been state sanctioned before signing up for the class.
Each year, Oklahoma drivers attend these defensive driving classes for an array of reasons including traffic ticket dismal, breaks on insurance rates, and to generally improve their behind the wheel skills.
Defensive Driving Course Options in OK
Oklahoma drivers looking to attend a defensive driving course within the state have a couple of available options. First, a student can attend, in person, at a commercial driver’s training school, OR they can opt to learn the material through an online provider who has DPS clearance to offer the training material. Should you choose the former, attending the class in person, a certified driving instructor in a classroom setting will instruct you. To accommodate busy schedules, these classes are offered on weekends or during the evening hours following work or school routines.
Just like all endeavors from shopping to dating, the Internet has transformed the way we take care of business, and the online defensive driving option is becoming increasingly popular owing to the flexibility and ease in which you can complete the course material. Students can complete the material from the comfort of their own living room and on a schedule that works for them.
It should be noted that if you opt for the online version, the State of Oklahoma will require that you complete the material by a specific date. Should you fail to complete your course by that time, you will fail the class and not be afforded a refund.
Your course provider can supply you additional information regarding:
- Completion deadlines
- Retaking options if you fail final exam

Remove Points from Your OK Driving Record
Points against your driver’s record can be costly when it comes time to buy insurance, and completing a defensive driving class in Oklahoma can allow you to remove those points against your driving record.
The Oklahoma DPS is committed to keeping unsafe drivers of the road, so their point system is designed to track a person’s driving history. Essentially, drivers are granted a clean slate, meaning no points are assigned against their record until they commit a traffic violation. Depending on your offence, you are levied 1 or more points on your record, Should you accumulate 10 points within a 5 year period, your driving privileges will be suspended.
Successfully completing a defensive driving class will result in two points being deducted from your driving record. It should be noted that you can only avail yourself of this 2 point reduction once every two years. In addition, your driving record can never fall below 0 points.
To be eligible for these point reductions or traffic ticket dismissals, you need to meet the following conditions:
- You were not behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle
- You hold a valid Oklahoma driver’s license
- You did not receive tickets for multiple violations.
Your court may advise, or it might be indicated on the ticket, whether you are eligible to attend a defensive driving course as a way to dismiss your traffic ticket.
