FAQs

No, only new New York drivers who are 18 or older can take the 5 hour pre-licensing course online. If you are under 18, you will need to complete the class in a classroom or take a drivers ed class in your school.

The New York Online 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course is a training course approved by the NY DMV that provides information to new drivers such as basic road rules, safe driving concepts, defensive driving skills, and other factors that affect driving to help drive them safely.

New drivers over 18 are required to complete this licensing class (or Driver Education Courses that are approved by New York State Education Department if you are under 18) before they take driving lessons and can schedule their driving test to receive their New York driver license.  Driver training will need to be taken along with the prelicensing class prior to scheduling your road test.

Drivers Education is not mandatory in the state of New York if you are over the age of 18.

You must already have a valid New York Learner’s permit before starting the course. To get your permit, you'll have to schedule a road test appointment, visit the DMV with the required documents (NY photo id cards & 5-hour class course certificate) and take the written test.

Yes. Our NY Pre-Licensing Driver Education Course is approved by the state of New York and the NY DMV to ensure safe driving in New York state and that the DMV road test is cleared.

Currently, the New York state rules require that the 5-hour courses be a minimum of 270 minutes (4.5 hours) of instruction time. The good news is you have 30 days to complete it and you can tackle it in stages with no stop and start time. Our 5-hour prelicensing class is accessible 24/7 and allows you to log in and out as many times as you like.

Starting August 2020, New Yorkers who are 18 years or older will be able to complete the pre-licensing course 100% online. Similar to remote learning or zoom learning as of late, our driving school will ready you for your road test and the NYS roads!

New Yorkers 18+ years will be able to take this online course instead of going to an in-person, 5-Hour Pre-Licensing course.

You can log out and back into Online 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course as often as you like! The information will pick up where you left off.

Your Notification of completion certificate  from the prelicensing class will be made available immediately upon completion for download/printing. The student certificate of completion is accepted by the department of motor vehicles in New York state.

Students will be able to schedule their road-test with their local DMV within 48 hours.

Chapter Quizzes: 3 multiple-choice questions, 2 correct to pass our new york state department of motor vehicles approved driving class.

No final exam (Just 1 question) for our driving class.

How to Get a New York Driver’s License

Step 1: Prepare for the written permit test

Study the NY State Driver's Manual and take the practice tests.

  • Class D and M permit tests are given in 14 languages: English, Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Spanish.
  • To pass, you must get at least 14 of the 20 multiple-choice questions correct, including the correct answers to at least two of the four questions about road signs.
  • If you are applying for a motorcycle permit, you must get at least 3 out of the 5 motorcycle questions correct.

Step 2: Gather what to bring to the DMV

You will need proof of age, identity and residence

When you apply at the DMV to take your permit test, you will need to provide proof of age, identification and residence. Your permit will be Standard, Enhanced, or REAL ID, depending on the proofs you bring and the fee.

What is the difference between a Standard, Enhanced or Real ID?

Complete one of these guides to ensure you have the documents and proofs of identification you need BEFORE you go to the DMV.

You can also see a complete list: How to Apply for a New York Learner Permit/Driver License/Non-Driver ID Card (PDF) (ID-44).

If you use the "Statement of Identity and/or Residence by Parent/Guardian (PDF)" (MV-45), your parent or guardian must come with you.

Lastly, you will need to pass the New York state road test. Oh, but before you attempt to do that, those under 18 must have practiced under supervised driving (private driving lessons) for a minimum of 50 hours (at least 15 hours after sunset and 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic) before going to the NYS DMV to get tested on the rules of the road.

Step 3: Go to the DMV

At the DMV, you will
  • First, apply and pay for your permit – see the fee chart to estimate the cost
  • Then, take the written test (if you fail, you can try again at no additional cost)

Office procedures have changed due to COVID-19.

We recommend you conduct your DMV business at the office or by mail in the County where you are a resident.

If you pass your written test
  • We will give you a temporary permit at the office
  • You will receive your permit within 2 weeks by mail

Your permit will be valid for approximately 5 years (the exact expiration date depends on your date of birth and the date that you applied).

If you fail the written test, do not worry. You can try it again at no additional cost.

Once you pass the New York DMV road test you will receive an interim license which allows you to drive until you get the official photo one with your smiling face on it in the mail. You will be driving behind the wheel in no time!

Our Mission: Save Lives
Our Vision: To Rethink The Ordinary

We believe in thinking differently. We believe in challenging the status quo. We had an idea 25 years ago that changed the driving industry forever. The notion was simple: the more you enjoy learning, the more you'll remember. Over four million students and several effectiveness studies later, we're proud to say that we were right.

Foundational cognitive psychology research has shown that we learn best when lessons are short, spaced out over time, and actively tested. These are the proven brain-training techniques used to power the IMPROV® RecallBOOST platform. Learners receive focused, highly-targeted information in short, hard-hitting, and engaging bursts, making the given learning objectives stick.
