What is the New York DA Traffic Ticket Program?
The DA Traffic Ticket Program is a county-administered diversion program offered by participating New York District Attorney offices. Drivers who receive a traffic ticket may be offered the option to complete a state-approved defensive driving course instead of going to court. Upon successful completion, prosecution is withdrawn and no conviction appears on your driving record.
Is this course approved by New York DA offices?
This is New York’s 6-hour DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP, Course ID 519). Participating New York county DA offices accept this course as part of their ticket diversion programs. Confirm with your DA office that they accept this course before enrolling.
Is this program available statewide?
No. The DA diversion program is administered at the county level. Not all New York counties participate, and program terms vary by county. This program is also not available for tickets issued in New York City, where the Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) handles all traffic matters. Check with your county DA office to confirm your ticket is eligible.
Which New York counties participate in the DA program?
Many New York counties outside of NYC participate, including Allegany, Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Essex, Madison, Nassau, Sullivan, Suffolk, Westchester, Wyoming, and others. This list is not exhaustive and participation can change. Always confirm with your county DA office before enrolling.
How is this different from the standard NY Defensive Driving Course?
The underlying course is the same 6-hour NY DMV-approved PIRP course. The difference is the outcome: when taken under a DA program, prosecution of your ticket is withdrawn, meaning no conviction appears on your driving record. Standard PIRP reduces points on your driving record and qualifies you for an insurance discount, but does not dismiss a ticket. Completing either course qualifies you for the 10% PIRP insurance discount.
