PIRP stands for Point and Insurance Reduction Program. It is New York’s official DMV-approved defensive driving program. Completing PIRP reduces points on your NY DMV record, qualifies you for an insurance discount, and satisfies the TLC defensive driving requirement for license renewal.
All active NYC TLC license holders are required to complete a NY DMV-certified Defensive Driving Course as part of TLC license renewal. This includes yellow taxi, green boro taxi, black car, limousine, for-hire vehicle (FHV), and rideshare drivers. The course must not be older than three years at the time of your renewal application.
The NY DMV-certified Defensive Driving Course cannot be older than three years at the time of your TLC renewal application. You must complete a new course at least every three years. Note: the DDC is a separate requirement from the TLC Driver License Renewal Course, which is also required every three years.
‘Hack license’ is the traditional term for the NYC TLC for-hire vehicle driver’s license. The term is still recognized by the TLC, which is why it appears in our course name. The course satisfies renewal requirements for all active TLC license holders.
Yes. All NYC TLC-licensed for-hire vehicle drivers, including rideshare drivers working under apps like Uber and Lyft, can use this course to satisfy the TLC defensive driving requirement.

The discount applies to your personal auto policy. Contact your insurer to confirm when the discount takes effect on your specific policy.
The NY PIRP insurance discount applies to personal auto insurance policies. Whether it applies to a TLC commercial vehicle policy depends on your specific insurer and policy type. Contact your insurance carrier directly to confirm coverage under your commercial policy.
Completing this course reduces up to 4 points from your New York State DMV driving record. Point reduction can help you avoid license suspension if your record is approaching the suspension threshold.
The 4-point reduction applies to your NY DMV driving record. The TLC reviews your DMV record as part of license renewal, so a reduced point total can positively affect your standing. Note: the TLC also maintains its own Critical Driver Points system, separate from your NY DMV record. The TLC can suspend your license after 6 or more Critical Driver Points within a 15-month period and revoke it after 10 or more points within that period. Reducing DMV points through PIRP does not automatically reduce TLC Critical Driver Points.
The 10% discount applies for 3 years from the date you complete the course. You can retake the course after 3 years to renew your discount eligibility.
