More information to help you make the right choice.

Improved safety, enhanced awareness of the road and vehicles around you and better overall driving abilities are just a few of the benefits offered by a defensive driving program.

Successful completion of a traffic program or defensive driving course may do more than just help you boost your skills; in some cases, points can be removed from your record as well.

The DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) is in charge of certifying select third party defensive driving courses offered online.

Washington, D.C. Defensive Driving Program Benefits

When you complete a defensive driving program in the Washington, D.C. area, you may be able to reap some additional benefits including:

  • Increased awareness and better reactions to common traffic problems
  • Boosted driving knowledge and skills
  • Enhanced safety on busy streets
  • Reduced car insurance rates
  • Reduced points on your record

How Can Traffic School Remove Points from Your Record?

Accumulate too many points and you risk suspension or revocation of your driver’s license. In Washington D.C., the DMV has created a system designed to keep track of your driving record and let you know if your license is at risk.

Losing your driving privileges could impact every aspect of your life; when you complete a defensive driving course you can reduce your risk.

How do you know if you can have points removed from your license? The DMV will contact you after you’ve received a ticket; you’ll be informed if you are eligible to attend a defensive driving program and have your points removed.

Once the DMV contacts you and confirms your eligibility you’ll have 30 days to enroll in and complete a defensive driving course. Once you have successfully completed the traffic school program, the points will be waived (the violation will still appear on your record, but the points will not count against you).

If you opt not to take a defensive driving program, points will stay on your record for two years.

How can a Defensive Driving Program Reduce Your Insurance Rates?

Insurance rates are likely to rise after you’ve received a moving violation or been involved in an accident. Many insurers offer to retain your original premium costs if you complete a defensive driving program. No accidents? Ask your insurer how becoming a safer driver can help you save.
