What is the Florida TLSAE course?
The Florida Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course is a state-mandated 4-hour educational program required for all first-time Florida driver’s license applicants 18 years of age or older who have never held a driver’s license from any US state, country, or jurisdiction. It is also commonly referred to as the Drug and Alcohol Course, DATA (Drug Alcohol Traffic Awareness), ADAPT, or First Time Driver Course. All of these names refer to the same course.
Is this course approved by the Florida FLHSMV?
Yes. This course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and is accepted statewide in all 67 Florida counties.
Is this required for teens under 18?
No. As of August 1, 2025, the 4-hour TLSAE course no longer satisfies the requirement for applicants under 18 years old. Teens under 18 must now complete the new 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course instead. If you are 18 or older, the 4-hour TLSAE is still your required course.
Is this the same as the DATA or Drug and Alcohol Course?
Yes. The TLSAE course goes by several names: Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE), Drug and Alcohol Traffic Awareness (DATA), ADAPT, Drug and Alcohol Course, and First Time Driver Course. They all refer to the same state-approved 4-hour course.
How long is the course?
The course is 4 hours, divided into 5 modules. You can complete it in one sitting or spread it across multiple sessions at your own pace.
