Tennessee Defensive Driving
More information to help you make the right choice.
If you are looking to get around a license suspension, have a ticket dropped, complete a court order, or just add to your knowledge as a driver, then consider taking a Tennessee defensive driving course.
For whatever benefit or requirement you are trying to satisfy, you'll walk away with a bunch of new tips and techniques for becoming a safe driver and avoiding future offenses and car accidents.
You're about to find out what a Tennessee traffic school course entails, which includes information about when you may enroll in a course and what requirements you will have to meet in order to receive your certificate of completion.
Taking a Tennessee Traffic School Course
You could be eligible for taking a traffic school course if you:
- Want to prevent your license from being suspended because of too many points.
- Lower the suspension period of your Tennessee license.
- Have a traffic offense dismissed.
- Meet a court demand.
- Reduce your car insurance premium.
Generally, your chances of qualifying for any of the above reasons will be determined by the court handling your case, the DOS, or your auto insurance provider.
The determination will be done by looking at your driving record, the driving courses you have already finished, and the details behind your violation.
Mandatory Tennessee Defensive Driving Course
A defensive driving program may be required if:
- You have 12 or more points against your license within the past 12 months.
- You are under the age of 18 with 6 or more points in the past 12 months.
If your license is at risk of becoming suspended, you will receive a notification from the DOS in which you can ask for a hearing to go over the details of your suspension. This showing in court could offer you the chance to take a traffic school course in order to keep your license in good standing or take away time from the suspension period.
Tennessee Defensive Driving for Tickets
After being accused of a traffic offense, the courts may let you get the ticket and license points dropped by finishing a defensive driving class.
You will likely only be able to dismiss a maximum number of tickets with a specified number of months, so your court will decide if you are eligible or not.
In addition, you will most likely not be able to have major traffic offenses dropped with a traffic school course.
To find out more, talk to those in charge of your case.
Defensive Driving Programs and Car Insurance Discounts
If you complete a defensive driving program without being told to, you may be able to use your course to achieve a lowered car insurance premium.
Since a lot of the time insurers will only give discounts to new drivers and seniors, you should check with your agent first.
Tennessee Traffic School Topics
Taking the course online or in a classroom will present you with the same type of driving information. Some topics include:
- Techniques for defensive driving.
- Mentally preparing for the road.
- Tennessee traffic offenses.
- Alcohol/drug offenses.
- How to share the roads.
Whichever course you end up taking, you will spend about 4-8 hours completing it. Check with the authority in charge of your case or your insurance provider to ensure you are selecting a course that is approved.
Successful completion of the course means you will have to pass a test at the end. If you score a passing grade, your certificate will be given to you and your results will be submitted to the traffic court or DOS.
If you would like further clarification or more details, you should contact:
- The TN DOS.
- The court handling your case.
- Your auto insurance agent.
