Because traffic accidents cause so many injuries and deaths each year, the
New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has developed a program called The Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP). This program promotes defensive driving habits, and rewards drivers for completing an approved New York defensive driving course. After successfully completing a course, the driver will receive a reduction of points on his or her driving record and a discount on insurance premiums. Each approved course meets the state’s standards for training defensive driving techniques.
By successfully completing a New York defensive driving course:
- You will improve your knowledge of driving skills and review current traffic laws and safe driving tips.
- You may be eligible to receive up to four points off your driving record. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will receive automatic notification from the course administrator when you finish the defensive driving course.
- If you are the primary driver of your motor vehicle, you will receive at least a 10 percent decrease in your premiums for automobile and motorcycle collision and liability insurance for three years.
New York defensive driving courses teach you to maintain a cautious awareness of the road and traffic conditions at all times. In addition, the courses will instruct you on the most current and safest methods for handling your vehicle. These driving skills help to reduce vehicular accidents, property damage, personal injury and deaths.
The New York DMV maintains a list of approved courses online, and you can enroll in one directly through the DMV website. Defensive driving
classes to reduce insurance premiums and points are available in traditional classroom settings and over the Internet. Classroom instruction includes approximately five hours of training.
The PIRP program will update your driving skills, train you in defensive driving methods and reduce your points and insurance premiums with just a few hours of training.
