How long does the online defensive driving course take?

Only 10 easy chapters, 24 minutes each - It's a state law, and every school has to ensure that you comply with a minimum time requirement.

Am I eligible to attend a defensive driving school?

Yes, if...

  • You have not completed a defensive driving course to dismiss a violation in the prior 24 months of the date of this citation.
  • You were not involved in a crash that resulted in death or serious physical injury.
  • You were not cited while driving with a commercial license.
  • Your violation is on this list of eligible violations, you can take traffic school to dismiss it.
  • You are NOT a holder of a commercial driver license or if you are attending for a violation which occurred while driving a commercial vehicle which requires a commercial driver license.

What is the difference between the Voluntary and Court Ordered course?

The course itself is exactly the same. The only difference is who is responsible for collecting required court/state fees. We are required to collect both state and court fees on the Voluntary course. When the course is Court ordered, Court fees are collected in the Court and we only collect $65 state fees. Court diversion fees vary from one Court to the other. You can find a chart of total fees for each Court here.

To get proper credit for ticket dismissal it is important that you select the appropriate option for your situation. If correct fees are not collected, you will not get proper course credit and your ticket will not be dismissed. If you are not sure which option is right for you, call and we will help you select the appropriate course.

How does the court know I finished the course?

We notify the court electronically that you passed the course.

How do I enroll?

We are required to have a copy of your citation, a legible copy of your driver license and the signed registration agreement.

  • Once you complete the course, we issue you an instant certificate and notify the court.

How do I submit my documents?

  • Scan your documents and send us an email with the images attached.
  • Fax the front of the citation and an enlarged, lightened copy of your driver license.
  • Mail copies to our office - make sure you have enough time for the mail to arrive!

No Fax or Scanner - No problem! Take a good picture with your phone and text it to us. See instructions on the Eligibility form.

Suggestions for successful submissions:

  • If you choose email a digital photo of a document, make sure that you can see all of the edges of the paper in the picture.
  • Faxes are often hard to read because the officer's writing is too faint. It's okay to use a pencil and darken in all of the writing.

The officer wrote my information wrong. Should I correct it?

No. Leave the information the way they wrote it, but let us know. We'll call the court and find out what they want us to do.

My due date is approaching - What should I do?

State rules require you to complete the course 7 days before the due date marked on your court paperwork. This allows courts to properly process your completion and dismiss your case.

If you are up against your deadline, make sure to pick one of the Priority Eligibility Options during the registration.

Some courts may grant due date extensions if you can't comply with the ordered completion time frame. You will need to contact the court that issued your citation in order to obtain a continuance.

What does Defensive Driving mean?

Defensive Driving is a term coined in 1960s (the explosion of the automobile era) by the National Safety Council. It's a term that defines a series of common sense driving techniques that, if followed, will help reduce the risk of automobile crashes by anticipating basic driving scenarios.

As logic goes, even if you're a seasoned professional driver, you're still at risk due to factors outside of your control. Actions of other drivers contribute to many traffic crashes. Defensive driving teaches you to anticipate emergencies and actions of other drivers.

What are Defensive Driving Techniques?

The main thing to remember about defensive driving is that you must always PREDICT and ANTICIPATE what drivers and other street users (pedestrians, bike riders etc…) may do and what will you do to avoid it. You're constantly looking ahead, asking yourself WHAT IF? What if the driver ahead of me slams on the brakes? What if that parked car opens a door? What if someone cuts in front of me? What if someone runs a red light? You get the picture.

Make sure you see them and most important… MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU.

Remember that you're sharing the road with millions of drivers (over 200 million as of last count). To be safe driver you must work to communicate with other drivers and road users. Most of this wisdom is really simple; use your signals, make sure your brake lights are working, don't drive in other vehicles' blind spots, try to maintain an eye contact with other drivers, etc.

Be a pessimist.

When driving, the glass is always half empty. Don't assume that the other motorist will do the right thing. In other words, it's one case where its okay to assume that the other driver is an idiot who doesn't know what he/she is doing (just don't yell it out the window).

To summarize, as a defensive driver you:
  • Scan the road ahead and around you.
  • Plan for Emergencies.
  • Ask yourself: "What If?"
  • Plan an escape route.
  • Make sure that other drivers see you.
  • Avoid distractions, like cell phones.

By following this easy and simple logic, you become a Defensive Driver who can predict and avoid many dangerous situations.
