Top New Mexico Defensive Driving Tips
New Mexico courts order defensive driving courses for several different reasons. Whether a person has a traffic infraction, a license suspension, or has some other reason for needing New Mexico Defensive Driving Tips, a defensive driving course can help.
In the state of New Mexico, a defensive driving course, often called "traffic school" or an "insurance point reduction class" may be required for drivers who have some issues with traffic tickets or other violations related to road safety. There are several different reasons an individual may need to attend a New Mexico Defensive Driving class, including:
- To follow court orders given after some type of traffic violation.
- To get lower insurance rates. While not all insurance agents will do so, some companies give discounts to drivers who have completed a defensive driving class.
- To get the total number of points on your driving record reduced. This is often done when a person is in danger of license suspension, or already has a suspended license. If driving privileges are already suspended and a formal application for reinstatement has been submitted to the courts, a New Mexico Defensive Driving has to be completed within 90 days of application submission.
Types of Traffic School in New Mexico
New Mexico residents have got a couple of different choices in traffic schools. The old-school classes are held in classrooms and are typically conducted on either weekends or on weekday evenings. While this is perhaps the better known option, it is no longer the most popular.
Today, many New Mexico residents are choosing online defensive driving classes. The reasons that the popularity of Internet traffic school is on the rise include:
- 24 hour access to course materials
- Participants can choose any start and end date desired
- Participants can take the class from almost anywhere: Home, work, the local coffee shop, or anywhere with WiFi.
Many Internet based traffic schools even offer tech support for people with questions or issues, a level of support that you may not get with classroom based courses.
The Details On New Mexico Defensive Driving Classes
Because the laws are always changing and new driving laws are born every year, it is difficult to state precisely what a defensive driving class will include. Today's classes may be quite different from what students are being taught six months from now. Regardless of these changes, there are some things that tend to stay constant in defensive driving classes in the state of New Mexico. Be sure that you check out the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division's latest rules prior to your class to be sure the following things still apply, though!
- A current New Mexico driver's license is necessary
- Your ticket was issued while you were driving a private (non-commercial) vehicle
- You can generally take a defensive driving class a limited amount of times. Usually, once per year or once every 18 months.
If your goal in taking the class is to get a traffic violation dismissed, it must usually be a sole violation. Not every case is eligible for a dismissal, so inquire with the court in charge of your case to determine if yours is.
The average traffic school class in New Mexico is anywhere from four to eight hours in length.
Should you elect to complete your defensive driving class requirements on the Internet, you will typically be allowed a specific period of time to finish the class. 180 days is the typical time allotment for online classes. If you don't finish the class successfully in that time, you will not be able to get your money back and you won't have the completion certificate you need, either.
Once you have finished your class, you need to successfully complete one final examination. The exam length does vary based upon which New Mexico county where you were ticketed. The average final exam is 25 questions, however your class instructor can give you details as to exactly how long your own exam will be. In the event you fail your final exam, the court may allow you to take it again. This varies according to case, but in general the courts want you to succeed so you may be allowed another chance.
