Defensive Driving in Idaho

If you've been convicted of a traffic offense or are simply just looking to lower your car insurance premium, you can take a class for defensive driving in Idaho. You will need to make sure that the course and/or school you choose is approved by the Idaho DMV before signing up.

The DMV of Idaho recognizes both classroom and online courses where you can learn handy techniques that can help you prevent further traffic offenses and accidents as well.

Learning defensive driving in Idaho can be of great benefit to you even if you are not allowed to use it for a point deduction or reduction of a car insurance premium.

Benefits of Idaho Defensive Driving Courses

Depending on your situation and past driving record, you can enroll in a defensive driving course for the following reasons:

  • To get a discount on your car insurance.
  • To get a license point deduction.
  • To meet requirements of a traffic violation.

You can choose between taking your course in a classroom or online. Sometimes your situation will call for a specific course, but it usually comes down to personal preference and what works best with your schedule.

NOTE: After receiving a traffic violation, the Idaho traffic court may give you the option of completing a traffic school class to rid you of your offense or to meet your court ordered requirements. Contact your local court for further details.

Idaho Traffic School to Remove Driving Record Points

Traffic offenses lead to points being added to your Idaho DMV record. Getting too many points brings with it the risk of losing your license.

You can finish a defensive driving class every third year, and each time you can take off a maximum of three points.

After getting a warning letter for your level of points, you may be able to complete a traffic school course to prevent a suspension of your license.

NOTE: If your license has already been suspended due to too many points, a defensive driving class will not reverse the suspension.

Get an Insurance Discount with Idaho Defensive Driving

An auto insurance discount can be achieved by completing a traffic school/defensive driving course.

Generally, these discounts are offered to new drivers and those over a certain age, but it's worth checking to see if you are eligible by calling your auto insurance provider.
