When someone’s license is suspended, it means that it’s temporarily out of service. In other words, if you have a suspended license and decide to drive a vehicle anyway, you’re breaking the law. And in Georgia, the penalty for driving on a suspended license is an extension of the suspension by six months.

There are many reasons as to why your license may be suspended. There are also some things that you can do to ensure that you’re back legally operating a vehicle on said license, like completing a defensive driving course Georgia. This post will take a closer look at how to learn if your license is suspended and what to do about it:

Checking Your License Status

First things first, how do you know whether you have a suspended license? The good news is that this is fairly easy to find out – all you need to do is check your record. This can be done by either contacting the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles by phone or by logging on to the Georgia DMV website. When you access your driving record, you’ll be able to view moving violations, points on your license and whether the license has been suspended or revoked. If you check your driving record and see that your license has indeed been suspended, the next step is to figure out why.

Why Is My License Suspended?

Your license may have been suspended for many reasons, but the reasons typically fall into four main categories: major violations, excessive license points, driving without car insurance and non-driving related issues. Here’s a brief rundown of each:

• Major violations: This includes the likes of vehicular homicide, committing a felony with a vehicle, fleeing police, a hit and run, a fraudulent license and improper registration, among others.

• Excessive license points: When you’re cited by police, points are applied to your license. In Georgia, if you rack up 15 or more points within a 24-month period, your license will be suspended.

• Driving without Car Insurance: All Georgia drivers must have valid car insurance.

• Non-driving issues: Things like unpaid child support or court-related issues can prompt a judge to suspend a driver’s license.

How to Fix a Suspended License

The fix for a suspended license largely depends on the reason for why the license was suspended in the first place. In most cases, drivers are required to pay reinstatement fees, which vary based on the type of offense that was committed, how frequent the offense was committed and whether the fine was paid in person or via mail. For instance, a license suspended due to a DUI costs $200 to reinstate via mail and $200 to reinstate in person.

There are a few other considerations to keep in mind when it comes to reinstating a license. For instance, if it’s been suspended because of excessive points, taking a defensive driving course in Georgia can help remedy this issue. Successful completion of such a course can trim up to seven points from your record. However, it’s also worth noting that you’re only permitted to reduce points by taking such a course once every five years. What’s more is that your license will remain suspended for the duration of time it takes you to complete the course. Be sure the course is approved by the GA DDS, our defensive driving course GA is for court-ordered or insurance discounts only.

Another thing you can do is request a hearing to appeal the suspension if you believe it may have been suspended illegally. The request for the hearing must be completed within 10 days of the suspension and fees may also apply for the hearing.

drunk driverPolice say that last Saturday Joshua Newsome of Alto, Georgia, was driving south on Highway 441 when he collided with several other stopped vehicles.

Although several vehicles sustained severe damage, injuries to everyone involved in the multi-car crash were reportedly minor and no one was hospitalized.

Police arrested Newsome on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The chain reaction crash caused the closure of Highway 441 for almost two hours as damages were assessed, injured persons were treated at the scene; police and fire departments arrived and secured and/or removed damaged vehicles.

The fact that no one was seriously injured in the crash seems a fluke of luck. Police have not released details of how fast Newsome was driving, but the fact his vehicle was traveling fast enough to collide with five other vehicles seems a good indication he must have been moving at a decent clip. Also, given that he was under the influence of alcohol that just compounds the risk of a deadly crash (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and proves everyone involved in that collision was having a “lucky” day.

duiThe Georgia State Patrol and the Florida Highway Patrol have teamed up to make certain all the fans arriving for the Georgia Bull Dogs and Florida Gators game in Jacksonville this weekend do it safe and sober.

This combined force has been promoting safe driving in the run-up to the game and making it clear that driving under the influence of alcohol will simply not be tolerated. That means on the north side of the Florida/Georgia border Georgia State Police will be increasing patrols to spot drunk drivers or even drivers just being reckless on the roadway because they are too excited for the upcoming game. South of the border the Florida Highway Patrol will be doing much the same thing.

These two agencies will be teaming up to keep their own fans safe, but also everyone else (including non-sports fans) who is sharing the highways with them before and after the game.

The annual Florida/Georgia game is known as “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” which has given people the idea that “anything goes.” Fortunately, the highway patrol and all local law enforcement officers have a different way of thinking about being a fan and supporting your favorite team. They want people to have fun and enjoy themselves, but they don’t want them to do it at the cost of someone’s life.

This weekend tens of thousands of Georgia and Florida fans will converge on Jacksonville to support their team and have a good time with their friends and families. This is a great way to spend the weekend and there is certainly nothing wrong with having a good time.

prevent duiGeorgia police, like most police around the country, are some of the nice folks you’ll ever meet. Unless you meet while you are driving under the influence of alcohol. In that case they turn mean real fast.

To sow how much they care about the safety of everyone on the road this coming Labor Day weekend, Georgia police will be participating in the 21st Annual ‘Hands Across the Border’ intra-state impaired driving and highway safety crackdown. The joint effort by police in Georgia and across the southeast means increased patrols, random DUI checkpoints and a zero-tolerance attitude toward DUI regardless of who you are or where you are from.

Starting this past Sunday and leading up to Labor Day weekend, police, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers throughout Georgia will rendezvous in communities near the state line to set up checkpoints and catch impaired drivers entering and leaving Georgia. Their goal is to make certain nobody thinks they can cruise to the state for a few beers and then cruise home, safe and sound. Or vice-versa.

In Georgia, as in all states, the blood alcohol limit for a DUI is .08 percent. Just one beer, one glass of wine or one shot of liquor is enough to send some people over the limit. And not many people stop at just one. Being under the influence of alcohol slows reaction time, impairs your ability to operate heavy machinery (cars weigh more than a ton, so they count as ‘heavy machinery’) and also serious impairs your judgement.

Drunk driving remains a leading of traffic related fatalities in the United States, despite recent attention on the dangers of distracted driving. Three day weekends and holidays, especially Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Labor Day, are statistically and historically known to be trouble times when it comes to the number of drunk drivers on the road.

And Georgia police intend to be ready for anything.

duisGeorgia authorities, local police and the Georgia Highway Patrol, have been focusing their efforts of finding and citing those who cannot resist driving under the influence of alcohol. As a result the number of drunk drivers or drivers under the influence of something, has risen, but the number of drunk drivers itself has gradually declined.

According to Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers, the number of drunk drivers in Georgia declined by more than 10 percent in 2011 compared with 2011. MADD statistics show there were 298 DUI fatalities on Georgia roadways in 2011. A sharp decline from previous years.

There simply is no excuse for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Studies have shown that as little as one beer, one glass of wine, or one shot of alcohol is enough to significantly diminish your ability to safely operate a vehicle. Alcohol impairs your judgement, slows your reflexes and causes you to react to situations at a much slower rate than you would if you were not impaired.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only distracted driving causes more traffic fatalities than driving under the influence, and distracted drivers actually take their eyes off the road completely. That means that drunk drivers who are watching the road ahead are almost as unsafe as those who are not even watching where they are going.

If you are arrested for driving under the influence of drugs of alcohol, traffic citations are likely the least of your concerns. many states are requiring first time DUI offenders to install an inter-lock device which requires the driver to self-administer and pass a breathalyzer test before the engine will start, and many more states are also suspending driving privileges for a minimum of six months.

When it comes to driving under the influence of drugs of alcohol, the best defense is to not get behind the wheel in the first place. Do yourself and everyone else on the road a favor and find a sober driver or arrange for a safe ride home.
