Driving Class FAQs

No. Only new drivers who are 18 or older can take the pre-licensing course online. If you are under 18, you will need to complete the class in a classroom, or take a drivers ed class in your school.

The New York Online Pre-Licensing Course is a training course approved by the NY DMV that provides information to new drivers such as basic road rules, safe driving concepts, defensive driving skills, and other factors that affect driving to help drive them safely.

New drivers over 18 are required to complete this licensing class (or Driver Education Courses that are approved by New York State Education Department if you are under 18) before they take driving lessons and can schedule their driving test to receive their New York driver license.  Driver training will need to be taken along with the prelicensing class prior to scheduling your road test.

In New York, it is required to complete a Pre-licensing Course or a high school or college Driver Education Course.

You must already have a valid New York Photo Learner Permit before starting the course.

Yes. Our NY Pre-Licensing Course is approved by the state of New York and the NY DMV.

Currently, the New York state rules require that the courses be a minimum of 270 minutes (4.5 hours) of instruction time. You have 30 days to complete it and you can take the course in stages with no stop and start time. Our prelicensing class is accessible 24/7 and allows you to log in and out whenever you need.

New Yorkers who are 18 years or older will be able to complete the pre-licensing course 100% online.

New Yorkers 18+ years will be able to take this online course instead of going to an in-person, Pre-Licensing course.

You can log out and back into Online Pre-Licensing Course as often as you like! The information will pick up where you left off. You have 30 days from the date of registration to complete the course.

Your Notification of Completion email will be emailed to you immediately upon completion of the course.

You will be notified within 48 hours that you completion has been accepted by the DMV. Once that notification is received, you will be able to schedule your road test with a DMV office.

Tests are scheduled through a statewide automated system (online or by telephone). Please note that not all DMV offices provide this service.

Yes. Each chapter contains a brief quiz with 3 multiple-choice questions.

How to Get Your Driver’s License

Step 1: Prepare for the written permit test

Study the NY State Driver's Manual and take the practice tests.

  • Class D and M permit tests are given in 14 languages: English, Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Spanish.
  • To pass, you must get at least 14 of the 20 multiple-choice questions correct, including the correct answers to at least two of the four questions about road signs.
  • If you are applying for a motorcycle permit, you must get at least 3 out of the 5 motorcycle questions correct.

Step 2: Gather what to bring to the DMV

You will need proof of age, identity and residence

When you apply at the DMV to take your permit test, you will need to provide proof of age, identification and residence. Your permit will be Standard, Enhanced, or REAL ID, depending on the proofs you bring and the fee.

What is the difference between a Standard, Enhanced or Real ID?

See what documents you need

Complete one of these guides to ensure you have the documents and proofs of identification you need BEFORE you go to the DMV.

You can also see a complete list: How to Apply for a New York Learner Permit/Driver License/Non-Driver ID Card (PDF) (ID-44).

If you use the "Statement of Identity and/or Residence by Parent/Guardian (PDF)" (MV-45), your parent or guardian must come with you.

Step 3: Go to the DMV

At the DMV, you will
  • First, apply and pay for your permit – see the fee chart to estimate the cost
  • Then, take the written test (if you fail, you can try again after 24 hours)

Office procedures have changed due to COVID-19.

We recommend you conduct your DMV business at the office or by mail in the County where you are a resident.

If you pass your written test
  • The DMV will give you a temporary permit at the office
  • You will receive your permit within 2 weeks by mail

Your permit will be valid for approximately 5 years (the exact expiration date depends on your date of birth and the date that you applied).

Lastly, you will need to pass the New York state road test. Oh, but before you attempt to do that, those under 18 must have practiced under supervised driving (private driving lessons) for a minimum of 50 hours (at least 15 hours after sunset and 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic) before going to the NYS DMV to get tested on the rules of the road.

Identity Verification

Step 1: Register and Set Up ID Validation

  • Register: Start by registering for the course. During registration, you'll pay the course fee and fill in some essential personal information (like your address, gender, date of birth, and driver's license number).

  • Set Up ID Validation: Once you've registered, you'll be prompted to set up your ID Validation. You'll choose how you'd like to receive your Personal Identification Number (PIN) – either through a phone call or a text message. You'll also provide a phone number that we'll use to verify your identity throughout the course.

Step 2: Validate Your Identity During the Course

  • As you progress through the course, you'll be asked to validate your identity at seven random intervals. You'll have 30 seconds to complete this step each time it's requested.

    • Phone Call Option: If you've chosen to receive your PIN via phone call, you'll need to call from the phone number you provided during setup to receive your PIN.

    • Text Message Option: If you've opted for text message validation, we'll send your PIN directly to the number you specified.

This process is vital for maintaining the integrity of your learning journey and ensuring that your certification is recognized and valid. If you have any questions or need assistance at any point, our support team is here to help.

Once you pass the New York DMV road test you will receive an interim license which allows you to drive until you get the official photo one with your smiling face on it in the mail. You will be driving behind the wheel in no time!

Our Mission: Save Lives
Our Vision: To Rethink The Ordinary

We believe in thinking differently. We believe in challenging the status quo. We had an idea 25 years ago that changed the driving industry forever. The notion was simple: the more you enjoy learning, the more you'll remember. Over four million students and several effectiveness studies later, we're proud to say that we were right.

Foundational cognitive psychology research has shown that we learn best when lessons are short, spaced out over time, and actively tested. These are the proven brain-training techniques used to power the IMPROV® RecallBOOST platform. Learners receive focused, highly-targeted information in short, hard-hitting, and engaging bursts, making the given learning objectives stick.
