FAQ’s for Adult Drivers Ed (Ages 18-20)

Illinois drivers between 18 and 20 years old that are applying for their license for the first time and that have not taken any other driver education course through highschool or a commercial driving school are eligible for the adult drivers ed course.

The course consists of 21 chapters and can be completed within 6 hours.

In accordance with the Illinois State law, the course must be completed within 30 days of registration.

In addition to the proof of completion you will receive, your completion will be electronically reported to the Illinois Secretary of State. At your local Secretary of State facility you will bring your required identification documents in order to complete the required vision, written, and behind-the-wheel examinations. Once you have finished those, and you're done! You will be eligible to receive your full, unrestricted, Illinois drivers license.

Yes. You will need proof that you took high school driver education in another state. With that proof, think your transcript that includes a passing grade in drivers ed, you are eligible to apply for an Illinois drivers license without needing to take the Adult Driver Education Course.

You do not. The Certificate of Completion for an Adult Driver Education Course is only needed when applying for an Illinois Driver’s License.

Since you will be applying for your drivers license for the first time in the State of Illinois, you will need to bring all of the required identification documents.

Yes. You will have to take a written test at the end of the six-hour course before taking the vision, written, and behind the wheel testing at the Secretary of State’s Driver Services Facility when you apply for your driver’s license.
