Do I Qualify for a Defensive Driving Course in Texas?
If you're considering taking a Texas Defensive Driving Course, you need information to help you make the right choice. Remember that there are many reasons to take a defensive driving course including:
- Removing points from your driving record.
- Reducing auto insurance rates.
- Fulfilling requirements for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or meeting a traffic court requirement.
The type of course that you choose to take depends on your reason for completing a defensive driving or traffic school course.
Frequently Asked Questions
You would not be eligible to take a Driving Safety Course for ticket dismissal purposes:
- if you have a Commercial Driver License (CDL); ?
- if you don't admit guilt or refuse to sign a statement that you do not dispute or challenge the ticket (nolo contendere); and
- if your ticket was for speeding 25mph faster than the posted speed limit.
Remember, the court makes the final decision on whether you will be allowed to dismiss your ticket by taking a driving safety course. Therefore, we recommend that you contact the court before taking the driving safety course to dismiss a ticket.
Yes. Each chapter is followed by a short quiz for review purposes only. No passing grade is required on quizzes, as this is a review exercise for learning purposes. However, you will need to pass a final quiz. The final quiz is only 20 multiple-choice questions that are based on material covered. You are also given an option to print course material and refer to it while taking the quiz.
We will notify the Texas Education Agency (TEA) electronically that you have completed the course within the required thirty (30) day time period.
However, our reporting your completion to the TEA does not substitute the need to submit your certificate to the court. Your ticket will not be dismissed until you submit your certificate of completion (and driving record, if required) to the court.
You should check your court documentation, but generally, students have 90 days from your request date to complete the Driving Safety Course.
If your insurance company offers a discount for taking a defensive driving course, the discount is usually applicable for 3 years. Be sure to check with your insurance company to confirm their policy.
All Texas approved courses have to follow same regulatory requirements and comply with rules related to testing and duration. Improv's Defensive Driving course consists of an introduction, ten (10) easy-to-follow modules, and a final 20 question multiple-choice quiz. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires that you spend a minimum of 360 minutes (6 hours) in the course. You can proceed through the course at your own pace. It's your option to either complete all material at once or in a number of sessions. We grant you unlimited in-and-out login privileges as long as you can complete the course before your court due date. Once you complete chapter material for all chapters, you can proceed to the final quiz. We will issue you an instant acknowledgement of course completion and will send you an original completion certificate within 24 hours of completion via the mailing preference you selected during registration.
Once every 12 months.
Yes. Students taking the course for traffic ticket dismissal are eligible for the insurance discount. Two certificates are mailed after successful completion of the course:
- One certificate will be marked "Court"
- One certificate will be marked "Insurance"
You can fail the course for the following reasons:
1. If you score less than 70% (10 questions) on the final 20-question multiple choice. However, you will be given two (2) additional opportunities to re-take the final quiz at no additional charge.
2. If you miss more than 3 (three) out of 10 personal validation questions asked throughout the course, you will fail the course.
TX TEA regulations state that if you fail the course, you are NOT entitled to a refund, but you are eligible to re-register for the course and take it again from the beginning.
Please Note: All questions are multiple choice, and are covered in the chapter material. In addition, you also have the option to print the chapter content for further review.
In order to validate your identity, we will ask you 10 personal questions pulled in random from the public databases (DMV, utility companies etc.. WE DO NOT access your private credit history). An example of a question: Please Select the Zip Code of your former address. You will have 90 seconds to select the proper answer. All questions are multiple choice. TEA regulations state that if you incorrectly answer more than 3 out 10 of the personal validation questions, you fail the course. Although you are not entitled to a refund in the event of a course failure, you are entitled to re-register for the course and take it again from the beginning if you choose to do so. You will also have an option to call our customer support and review your answers in case you may have misunderstood one of the questions.
Dismiss A Traffic Ticket?
Successful completion of the Texas Driving Safety Course will allow you to dismiss a traffic ticket from your driving record if approved to do so by the Court.
Insurance Rate Reduction?
Most Texas insurance companies will provide an insurance premium discount (usually 10%) for three years on the liability portion of your auto insurance when you submit to them your certificate of course completion issued by a Texas TEA-approved driving safety course provider. Check with your insurance agent for details.
If you receive a traffic ticket after taking the course for insurance discount purposes, you are permitted to take another driving safety class for ticket dismissal purposes if you haven't had a ticket dismissed within 12 months. This is generally the reason that courts require that you submit a copy of your driving record; they are using the driving record to verify that you haven't had any tickets dismissed within 12 months.
You have access to the course 24/7. However if you require technical assistance our customer support office is open 7 days a week from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM CST at 800-660-8908. If you need to reach an instructor after regular working hours, call 972-404-8501. Please note: only course-related questions can be answered after hours. Any technical support or questions about your completion certificate can only be answered during regular working hours.
Yes, both classroom and online version of our Defensive Driving course are approved by Texas Education Agency (TEA). Only TEA approved schools can offer certificates that are accepted by Texas Courts and Insurance Companies.
Quiz questions are entirely based on the chapter material covered, and are multiple choice or true/false. You will be given two (2) additional opportunities to re-take the final examination at no additional charge. Failure to pass the final examination after three (3) attempts results in course failure.
