Maine Defensive Driving
More information to help you make the right choice.
If you have been given a traffic violation, have a lot of points against your driver's license, or are looking to lower your car insurance payments, you could enroll in a Maine defensive driving course.
These traffic school classes are authorized by the Bureau of Highway Safety (BHS). These courses are typically available both online and in the classroom.
Aside from possibly getting your ticket dropped and lowering you insurance premium, a defensive driving course will give you the benefit of knowing how to avoid further violations and accidents.
Therefore, a defensive driving course has benefits even if you aren't eligible for getting a point deduction or insurance benefits.
Maine Defensive Driving Class
The benefits of taking a defensive driving class are:
- You may be able to get a ticket dropped.
- You can complete court requirements.
- You can have points taken off of your license.
- You can lower your car insurance payments.
If it's required by a court that you complete a defensive driving course, you will be informed on things such as:
- A deadline for completion.
- The exact course you must enroll in.
- Extra paperwork and fees you will need to take care of.
If none of that applies to you, then your course provider will let you know the details of completing the course.
Dismissing a Traffic Ticket
In regards to your specific situation, completing a Maine defensive driving course could get your traffic ticket dismissed and void some points off of your record. However, it is usually only minor traffic offenses that are eligible to be dismissed.
If you are unsure, contact your court for information.
Voiding Points off of Your Driving Record
Getting points deducted from your driving record is very possible after the completion of a defensive driving course.
After successful completion of an authorized program, you can get up to 3 points taken off of your Maine BMV record. You may only take advantage of this benefit once every 12 months.
This point deduction can save your from having your license suspended and from incurring higher BMV fines.
If you want to know if you qualify to have points taken off of your record, check with the Maine BMV.
Car Insurance Discounts
If you are looking to lower you car insurance premium, taking a defensive driving course is a great way to make that a possibility.
If you are over the age of 55, you can get a discount on your car insurance for the next 3 years by completing a defensive driving course.
Even if you are not over 55, you can still check with your provider since some will still allow others to get a discount.

Course Topics Covered
All Maine defensive driving courses have a similar layout with topics such as:
- Laws, violations, and consequences.
- Safe driving techniques.
- Responsible driving.
- Sharing the road with others.
Online and classroom courses cover the same material. The only difference is that the online course can be completed on your own schedule.
Whatever course you choose, it will last a total of about 5 hours.
With most courses, you will need to pass a test at the very end. After getting a passing grade, your certificate of completion will be given to you.
