Got an Arizona Traffic Ticket? Find Out What Comes Next

Our Arizona Online Traffic School for Defensive Driving is approved by Arizona Supreme Court, all the courts, Arizona Municipalities and JPs in Arizona. Improv electronically reports completions to all AZ courts, except Gilbert, Pima County Consolidated Justice, Paradise Valley Municipal Court.

What Does it Mean to You – Getting a ticket is bad enough..completing a course that is not approved will just add a salt to the injury. Google “Traffic School” or “Defensive Driving” and you get 1000s of hits. What you must know is that most of these schools are not approved in Arizona. Arizona court and state rules require that any school offering a defensive driving program in Arizona must be certified by the Arizona Supreme Court. To attend a driver improvement program for ticket dismissal in Arizona, students must provide all required paperwork, including any traffic citations to us, so that we can verify eligibility prior to starting the course. Payment of course fee, state and court fees are also due at this time. A government-issued driver’s license or other proof of identification is necessary to start the program. You must also confirm you are eligible to attend the problem. These are court rules and we can’t make exceptions – good news is we can handle it all for you so no more visits to the court will be required. Maybe you blew a stop sign or a red light. Or maybe you were going 15 over in a 55 mph zone. Whatever the reason, you got caught. And the cop didn’t let you off with a warning – no, you have a ticket.

You have three options:

  • You can either pay the ticket fine and be subject to increasing auto insurance rates, while racking up points on your driver’s license.
  • You can fight the ticket in court and hope it gets dismissed.
  • You can attend a defensive driving, or traffic school, course to have your ticket dismissed. Such courses instruct you on traffic and AZ driving laws, so that in addition to having your ticket dismissed, you’re also making a conscious effort to better your driving knowledge.

While there’s nothing wrong with the first two options, the following information will focus on the third option – traffic school. In order to attend Arizona defensive driving school online for the purpose of having a ticket dismissed, you must first qualify. For instance, to be eligible to fight a ticket via a defensive driving course, you can only attend for one violation and your citation must be eligible. Furthermore, in order to qualify, you can not have attended a defensive driving course for a traffic citation within the previous two years.

If you qualify, there are various regulations you must abide by in Arizona. Here’s a look at some of them:

  • You must complete the course at least seven days before your court date.
  • Are you a non-Arizona resident that was ticketed in Arizona? You still have traffic school options. You can coordinate a class through an Arizona-certified school to take a defensive driving course in your home state. You can also return to Arizona for the class or arrange to take the class online.

The court information can be found on your ticket/citation. Each court in Arizona has a unique ID number. This is the most reliable way to identify your court since some court names look alike. Don’t be confused by the strange names and locations. For example:

  • Sometimes the court name on the citation is not the name the Arizona State Supreme Court uses.
  • Cochise County Justice Court Precinct 5 is also called Sierra Vista JP (ID number 0205).
  • The words ‘Magistrate Court’ and ‘City Court’ mean ‘Municipal Court’.
  • Maricopa Municipal Court is in Pinal County … not Maricopa County.

Yes, if…

  • You have not completed a defensive driving course to dismiss a violation in the prior 24 months of the date of this citation.
  • You were not involved in a crash that resulted in death or serious physical injury.
  • You were not cited while driving with a commercial license.
  • If your violation is on this list of eligible violations, you can take traffic school to dismiss it.
Why do I need my eligibility verified – and how is it done?

Every licensed traffic school in Arizona is required to confirm your eligibility prior to allowing you to begin the course. All you need to do is complete the online registration and send us your driver license and court documents via email, fax or send images with your smart phone. We do the rest. It takes about 48 hours to verify your eligibility. However, you must complete the course 7 days prior to the day set by the court. If you are approaching that deadline, we offer an option of same day eligibility processing. For this option, select priority processing when prompted during the registration. Watch for an email from us with the subject “Improv Traffic School Eligibility Verified.” Once eligibility is cleared, you can start the course.

How do I submit my documents?
  • Scan your documents and send us an email with the images attached.
  • Fax the front of the citation and an enlarged, lightened copy of your driver license.
  • Mail copies to our office – make sure you have enough time for the mail to arrive! No Fax or Scanner – No problem! Take a good picture with your phone and text it to us. See instructions on the Eligibility form. Suggestions for successful submissions:
  • If you choose email a digital photo of a document, make sure that you can see all of the edges of the paper in the picture.
  • Faxes are often hard to read because the officer’s writing is too faint. It’s okay to use a pencil and darken in all of the writing.
My due date is approaching. What should I do?
  • Your certificate will be available immediately after completion of the course. However, the State of Arizona requires you to complete the course 7 days prior to the court appearance date shown on the citation. This processing time is needed to dismiss your case. If you do not have enough time to get the course completed within this time period, call the Court to ask for a continuance and to get instructions from them. The Court’s number is on the citation. Select Priority Processing options during registration if you are running short of time. Once we verify your eligibility it is up to you to complete the course in a timely manner.
The officer wrote my information wrong. Should I correct it?
  • No. Leave the information the way they wrote it, but let us know. We’ll call the court and find out what they want us to do.
Can I get more info on Arizona defensive driving program?
  • For more information, visit the Arizona Supreme Court website at http://www.azdrive.com or call the court toll free at 1-888-334-5565.

How does it work?
